After a serious injury or medical condition, people’s self-identities — as employees or students, parents, spouses and children, or athletes — can change in ways that can be distressing. Feelings of worthlessness after a stroke are predictive of present and future perceived social isolation, and leaving the house helps alleviate perceived social isolation and negative emotions. The results are published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
